Every Bromo tour brochure shows the same shot: Mount Bromo perfectly centred, surrounded by volcanic caldera, wisps of cloud below, Mount Semeru on the horizon. What the brochure doesn't mention is where that photo was taken — and whether it was from the famous Penanjakan, or from King Kong Hill, which our guides actually prefer.
Penanjakan 1: The Famous One
Penanjakan 1 (also called Mount Penanjakan) is the highest viewpoint accessible by jeep — at 2,770 meters, it sits 440 meters above Bromo itself. The panorama from the wooden viewing platform covers the full caldera: Bromo with its permanent smoke plume in the centre-left, the horseshoe of caldera walls, Semeru (3,676m, Java's highest) on the southern horizon, and on the clearest days, Argopuro to the north.
The reality: Penanjakan 1 is extremely popular. From May to September (peak season), 200–400 tourists are on the platform before sunrise. Tour buses park in waves from 3:30AM. The viewing platform is narrow. Getting a clean shot without other people in frame requires arriving very early (before 4:00AM) and positioning decisively.
King Kong Hill: The Local Favourite
King Kong Hill (Bukit Cinta — "Love Hill") is a separate viewpoint about 2km from Penanjakan, reached from a different jeep parking area. It requires a 20-minute uphill walk from the jeep (Penanjakan has a shorter walk). The elevation is slightly lower, and the angle on Bromo differs — Bromo appears more to the left of frame, with a wider view of the caldera's eastern section.
In our guides' experience, King Kong Hill is typically 70–80% less crowded than Penanjakan 1 at sunrise. On weekdays outside peak season, it's sometimes nearly empty. For landscape photography, the angle can actually be more interesting — Bromo isn't perfectly centred, which creates a more dynamic composition.
The Honest Comparison
| Factor | Penanjakan 1 | King Kong Hill |
|---|---|---|
| Elevation | 2,770 m | ~2,680 m |

| Peak season crowds | 200–400 people | 20–80 people |
| Bromo in frame | Centre-right | Centre-left |
| Semeru visibility | Excellent | Good |
| Photography | Iconic classic angle | Dramatic, less standard |
| Facilities | Warung, toilets | Basic only |
What Our Guides Actually Do
We make a real-time decision based on current conditions. If the weather is perfectly clear and we're arriving before 4:15AM, we often go to Penanjakan 1 first, then King Kong Hill after the crowd peaks. If it's foggy (which actually creates beautiful sea-of-clouds shots), King Kong Hill's wider angle captures it better. On busy holiday weekends, we prioritize King Kong Hill simply because the experience is better when you're not standing shoulder-to-shoulder.
On private tours, we always check the current crowd reports and make this call for you. This is something group tours can't do.
What About Penanjakan 2?
Penanjakan 2 is a third option — a lower viewpoint below Penanjakan 1, often used by travelers on horseback from Cemoro Lawang. The view is less elevated and typically less impressive than either of the options above. We don't regularly use it for sunrise, though it can make a pleasant addition on the return.
If you can only choose one: go to King Kong Hill on a private tour with a guide who can read current conditions. You'll have breathing room, a dramatic view, and your guide will know if Penanjakan is worth the extra crowd for that particular morning.
