Every year our guides watch tourists arrive at Bromo in thin jackets at 3AM, shivering so hard they can barely enjoy one of the most beautiful sunrises on Earth. This packing list exists to make sure that doesn't happen to you. Bromo sits at 2,329 meters, and the caldera temperature at pre-dawn regularly drops to 3–8°C even in the Indonesian summer. Wind chill at the viewpoint makes it feel colder still.
Travelers coming from Bali often pack only tropical clothes and assume Indonesia is uniformly warm. East Java's high-altitude volcanoes are cold. Pack for a cold autumn morning, not a beach holiday.
Clothing — The Layering System
The key to Bromo comfort is layers you can add and remove. You'll be cold at the viewpoint, then active walking to the crater, then exposed on the crater rim in wind.
| Layer | What to Bring | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Base Layer | Moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt | Keeps sweat off skin during active hiking |
| Mid Layer | Fleece jacket or light down | Primary insulation at the viewpoint |
| Outer Layer | Wind/rain jacket | Wind is the biggest cold factor at the rim |
| Legs | Long trousers (not shorts) | Cold + ash on the Sand Sea |
| Hands | Light gloves | Camera operation is very difficult with cold fingers |
| Head | Beanie or buff | 30% of body heat lost through head |
| Feet | Closed-toe shoes with grip | Crater steps are steep, Sand Sea is soft ash |
Essential Gear
Headlamp (not a phone torch)
A dedicated headlamp keeps your hands free for the climb and keeps your phone battery for photos. We recommend a 200+ lumen headlamp with fresh batteries. The Petzl Tikkina or any equivalent works perfectly. The viewpoint path is dark and uneven — a phone torch held in your hand is frustrating and insufficient.
Power Bank
Cold temperatures drain phone batteries faster. Bring a power bank charged to 100%. You'll be out from around 2AM to 9AM — that's a long time on phone battery alone, especially if you're shooting lots of photos.
Camera Preparation
Bromo sunrise is one of the most photographically rewarding experiences in Southeast Asia. A few tips: bring a wide-angle lens or use your phone's ultra-wide mode for the caldera panoramas. Bring extra memory cards. Keep your camera close to your body (inside jacket) until shooting — cold kills batteries. A small tripod dramatically improves pre-dawn shots.
Health and Comfort
- Water — At least 1 litre per person. The whole tour is 4–6 hours active.
- Snacks — Energy bars, nuts, fruit. There are warung (local stalls) at the Sand Sea but prices are elevated.
- Face mask or buff — The Sand Sea can be very dusty when the jeeps are running. A buff around your neck doubles as neck warmer.
- Altitude medication — Not usually necessary at 2,329m, but travelers prone to altitude sensitivity should carry it.
- Sunscreen — After sunrise, the Bromo caldera has intense direct sun with minimal shade.
If you've under-packed, rental jackets and horse rides across the Sand Sea are available at the national park entrance. Jacket rental is around IDR 30,000–50,000. The horse ride to the crater base is around IDR 100,000–150,000 and genuinely useful if you're short on time.
What NOT to Bring
- Flip flops or sandals — The crater steps are steep and loose. Closed shoes only.
- Large rolling luggage — Leave it at your hotel. A small daypack is all you need.
- Drones without permits — Drone flying requires a special permit inside Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. Flying without one risks confiscation.
- Large amounts of cash — The Sand Sea vendors and transport at the park accept Indonesian rupiah only, but you only need modest amounts.
