There is a trek that connects three of Southeast Asia's most dramatic volcanoes — across two Indonesian islands, through two entirely different landscapes, over roughly seven days of travel. Mount Bromo and Ijen in East Java, then a ferry to Lombok for Mount Rinjani. Together they represent everything extraordinary about Indonesian geology: an other-worldly volcanic plain, an acidic blue-fire lake, and a 3,726-meter summit with a crater lake and hot springs. This is how to plan it.

The Three Volcanoes: What Makes Each Unique

Mount Bromo (East Java) — 2,329 m

The spectacle volcano. Bromo isn't Indonesia's tallest or most active, but its setting — rising from a vast Sand Sea inside an ancient caldera — makes it the most visually dramatic. The sunrise experience is accessible to virtually any fitness level. Full Bromo guide →

Kawah Ijen (East Java) — 2,799 m

The science volcano. The midnight blue fire, the world's largest acidic lake, the traditional sulfur miners — Ijen is a combination of geological wonder, cultural significance, and raw adventure. More physically demanding than Bromo but still accessible for most reasonably fit travelers. Full Ijen guide →

Mount Rinjani (Lombok) — 3,726 m

The summit volcano. Rinjani is a serious multi-day mountain trek — Indonesia's second-highest volcano, requiring 2–3 days on the mountain with camping equipment and porters. The summit crater contains a stunning lake (Segara Anak) with active hot springs. The summit push (Day 2 morning) is steep, cold, and demanding. Rinjani rewards fitness and preparation with one of Southeast Asia's truly great mountain experiences.

Fitness Requirements

Bromo and Ijen: Moderate fitness is sufficient. Both require walking in darkness on uneven terrain. The Ijen descent to the crater floor adds moderate difficulty. If you can walk 5–8km with some elevation, you're ready.

Rinjani summit: This requires genuine physical preparation. The summit section (Day 2 early morning) involves 1,000+ meters of steep elevation gain on loose volcanic rock, in cold conditions, starting at 3:00AM. Porters and guides handle all equipment — your job is to walk. Fitness training in the weeks before the trip significantly improves the experience.

Rinjani crater rim (no summit): A valid option for less experienced trekkers. The rim camp at 2,641m with its views over Segara Anak lake is spectacular, and many travelers skip the summit push and spend more time at the lake instead.

⚠️ Important: Rinjani Permits

Rinjani trekking requires a TNGR (national park) permit. These must be booked in advance and have limited daily quotas. We handle all permits as part of our multi-island package. Do not arrive at the trailhead without a permit — you will be turned away.

Best Time for the Full Trip

April–October (dry season) is strongly recommended for the Rinjani portion — wet season trails on Rinjani become dangerous mud traps. For Bromo and Ijen, both seasons deliver excellent experiences. The sweet spot is May–September for the combined trip.

What This Trip Costs

A well-organized 7-day Bromo + Ijen + Rinjani trip including all guided tours, camping equipment, porters, park permits, and inter-island transport typically costs USD $450–650 per person for a group of 2–4. Solo travelers pay more due to private transport costs. Ask us for a personalized quote.

💡 Book as One Package

Coordinating Bromo, Ijen, and Rinjani independently across two islands is complex — different booking systems, permit requirements, and timing dependencies. Booking the whole trip as one package with us means one point of contact and zero logistics stress.
